Small airborne drones, equipped with sensors capable of assessing the structural integrity of an area’s roads, bridges, and tunnels, would be able to ensure the safety of these structures much more effectively than traditional teams of engineers. The reduced cost and personnel requirements of the drones would also mean that inspections can take place more often, allowing for safety issues to be caught before they have a chance to endanger the public.
Airborne drones are valuable tools for the inspection and maintenance of power lines. Optical cameras allow inspectors to efficiently gather data on the surface-level health of the lines (looking for visible damage, foliage obstructions etc.) and thermal cameras can detect hot-spots in power grid systems, all at a greatly reduced cost when compared with current methods.
